The history of FRANKENWOLLE

Follow our story, learn more about the highs and lows of our journey, and discover how each challenge has shaped us into who we are today. We are grateful for every step and look forward to sharing this exciting journey with you.

The start

In our local newspaper, we discovered an article in the spring of 2019 about the dilemma facing our Franconian (German) shepherds. With Birgit’s business, Wolle pur, in downtown Bamberg, we already had a natural affinity for wool.

In the summer of ’19, we met the shepherd Michael (Mike) Papp (who passed away in 2022) and his son David with the herd in the Rhön. With just a few words, we agreed that we would buy the wool from the next shearing (February 2020) and process it into hand-knitting yarn. The shepherds, like us, believed that trying is better than producing even more fertilizer pellets…

From there, the adventure of FRANKENWOLLE began!

Where will the wool be washed? Who will transport the raw wool? Where can we have the washed wool spun and dyed? We had time until the shearing to find answers to all these questions and suitable offers.

Some contacts probably smiled at us during that time, but by September 2020, we had our first production on the farm!
